How to use the rss-feed reader
iCdb comes with it's own integrated rss-feed reader. With only a few steps you can add any rss feed you like. This way iCdb keeps you up-to-date on events like comic conventions, new comic publications and other news about comics using your favourite comic rss feeds.
How to add new rss feeds
You can find the rss feeds in the info section of iCdb. By default there is one preconfigured feed: the iCdb Twitter feed. The is our way of keeping you up-to-date. Via this feed we will post news about the iPhone comic database app and this website. Alternatively you can follow us on Twitter.
To add a new feed follow these steps:
-
Set the info view to edit mode
In order to add new feeds, edit or remove existing feeds the info view has to be set to edit mode. In the upper right-hand corner you can see a button labeled "Edit". Tap it and the rss feeds will be editable. -
Add a new rss feed
In edit mode you will see an additional entry labeled "add new rss feed" and a green plus sign to the left of it. Tap this entry and a new view will appear where you can enter the feed's title and URL. -
Enter the rss-feed title and URL
For the new rss feed enter an arbitrary title and its URL. If you leave the feed title empty iCdb will try to read the feed title from the specified URL once you tab the "Save" button in the upper right-hand corner. iCdb will ask you to review the title it found. Leave the view by tapping the save button again. -
Exit edit mode
If you are done adding new feeds you can leave the edit mode by tapping the "Done" button in the upper right-hand corner.
If you want to edit an existing feed follow the above steps, but instead of tapping the entry labeled "add new rss feed" simply choose the entry you would like to edit.
How to update the rss feeds
Whenever the rss feeds are updated new rss items are downloaded. Additionally a badge with the number of new items will appear to the left of each updated rss-feed entry. Another badge with the total number of unread rss items will be displayed on the info section icon and on the iCdb icon on your iPhone's home screen.
There are two possible ways of updating the rss feeds:
-
Manual update
You can update the rss feeds manually at any time. Go to the info section of iCdb. In the upper left-hand corner you can see a button with a circular arrow. Tap it and the manual update will start. -
Automatic update
You can configure iCdb to update the rss feeds automatically whenever you open the iPhone app. To do this open your iPhone's settings app. Scroll down to the list of installed apps and tab the iCdb entry. In the "RSS Options" section set "Load feeds on startup" to "ON". After you leave the settings app the rss feed will be checked for updates each time you start iCdb.
